Out-compute

Does computing climb, and keep climbing, when nothing pays for it? Each run continues an emerged, never-paid world with a metabolism tape and the four-input logic machine, under a rule by which a cell takes energy from a neighbour whose every computed function it computes too. Three controls move the same energy with no ratchet, by a coin, or not at all. A labelled substrate: it imports a machine, not an objective.

The pre-registered reading final imports a machine, not an objective

Every child of every qualifying parent has finished. Each child continues an emerged world of the Reach with room to grow sweep, which no pay ever touched, and is paired with the child of the same parent in each other arm. All are read over their own samples past a settling window of 1,000 epochs. The level tests compare the median depth of the deepest rung held by a tenth of the world over the last tenth of those samples. The rise tests ask whether that median, or the number of rungs held, is at least 1 above the most the lineage reached before the second half: its median over the fifth tenth, its depth at descent, and every value it held for 5 samples running up to the fifth tenth's end. A child is extinct where its last-decile median share of replicators is below 10%, and a pair with an extinct child is in no test. Each test is a one-sided sign test at p < 0.05, re-read with the extinct pairs kept and without the parents the design study piloted (runs 4381 and 4428). Nothing is paid here, but the machine the tapes compute with is given, so rung 4 on Soup stays not shown whatever it reads.
